Challenges are simply opportunities in disguise
The story about how Yellow Door Home Services began is often told as the “How hard can it be?” story. The one where I talk about the moment the actual idea of becoming a General Contactor was inspired when the Contractor I had hired for our first rental property’s new laundry room remodel left town and left our next project and his crew scrambling.
The idea was pitched by the sub-contractor doing the work who told me, “I love what you guys are doing for the rental industry and your tenants and you are easy to work for, have you considered becoming a contractor? I would love to work for you and be a part of what you got going on.” Having no official experience under my belt, with the closest construction experience being building sets for the stage during my 10 years of working on theatre productions. My reply was surprisingly calm as I said… “ I mean, how hard can it be?” After that they say “the rest was history” but the real moment that allowed such a cool and collected response all began much much earlier.
To understand why the choice to step into a career in an industry you know absolutely nothing about you first have to understand the driving force behind the entire Yellow Door movement.
Family
That is right. A deep desire to spend more time with my family especially my daughter whom I waited 35 years to have. After I had lost my brother to drugs in 2011 when he was only 20. My father passed from Cancer 2021 at only 64, just 7 months before my daughter was born. He worked up until 2 weeks before he passed away. My fiancé's parents were both gone and his mother too had worked up until just before she passed.
I already knew I wasn’t going to continue to live a traditional 9-5 life after my brother passed away and all I got was 5 days bereavement. Since he had passed I had been on a mission to live a life that would allow me to be home with my family. When my father got sick we were already living completely off grid at the time. My fiancé and I made a tough decision and moved back to the city to help my parents just before my fathers passing, which I was able to be there along side my mother for. Then just six months later my daughter was born and I was determined to be 100 percent present with my family from that point forward. Life had shown me it was too short to miss a moment and I wasn’t about to spend any of this time working to make someone else rich or let a job who would replace me in an instant keep me away from my family in these precious moments.

How I became Unemployable.
Like my journey to realizing what was most important in life. It wasn’t a single moment… just a gradual transformation of becoming unemployable through being told I was “rocking the boat too much” by heartless corporations, leaving full time Entrepreneurship as my only option to keep a roof over our heads and food in our bellies while still being home with my family.
Having launched and run several small businesses over the years as extra income along side full time corporate call center jobs. Launching a new business came easily to me. Coupled with my passion for helping others reach their goals in life, I set out to build a life of happiness, stability and freedom.
That alignment is what lead my Mom to ask a simple question on the way to our friends vow renewal ceremony. “What would you guys think about moving back up to northern Arizona?” Immediately my reply was. “Leave me here and bring me my things. I never want to step foot in the heat of the “hinges of hell” also known as Phoenix, Arizona again. “ Followed by…” I am dead serious. I’m ready to move anywhere that is cooler than here. “
This idea rippled as we explored other states where we had friends living and a friends house coming up for sale lead us on a 10 day road trip in late October 2024 from Arizona to Missouri to see if relocating to Missouri felt like the right fit and ultimately what called us to Real Estate and owning rental properties. We left that road trip with a freshly remodeled triplex and a refreshed purpose for our lives to create spaces that people love to LIVE in.
By March of 2025 we had fully relocated to Missouri after nearly 28 years in Arizona and set to work on building a generational legacy that not only would set ourselves up for success but would ripple out into the lives of our tenants and customers.
Our property management company Hello Yellow Rentals was born and the vision of that brand quickly flourished into a full house of 3 wonderful renters who also were seeking to create something better in their lives. A waitlist that grows each month as renters are seeking affordable homes that feel safe and well cared for.We have been told countless times already that we are such great landlords and no one else in the area runs things like we do. Which started me looking into what it was like in the area. What I found was heartbreaking with a never ending list of horror stories about landlords treating their tenants like ATMS and failing to provide the most basic of repairs so that they could have a clean and healthy home to live in.
So, when the opportunity to create a new business that would not only give me a skilled team to help me build those better quality rental spaces but also the financial freedom to invest in more clean and healthy properties to offer to our growing waitlist. The answer of “How hard can it be?” came so easily.
Now we not only rent homes people love to live in but we get to care for the homes others have chosen to share as rentals or have built for their families. Bringing the Yellow Door Standard not only to the rental industry through the property management companies and private landlords we serve in their rental make readies or rental remodels but also to the personal homes of the residents of the local community we now call home.
