The Yellow Door Standard: What It Means and Why It Matters.

You may be asking yourself what is the Yellow Door Standard?

To understand that you have to understand what the current climate is in the rental industry. It’s spoken about often, I even have a TikTok video with over 700 comments from previous tenants who will gladly share how they have been treated by their past and present landlords.

We are talking a house full of mold "fixed" with a coat of the cheapest paint possible. A carpet deemed New but the reality it was cleaned by a poorly maintained Rented Rug Doctor. Walls patched with so much mud they are more mud & mold than drywall. Then this polished up turd (yeah I said turd) is rented to the, as the slum lords like to call their tenants... "those ungrateful slobs who are just going to f*ck it up anyway." Once they sign the lease, these unsuspecting renters pleas for at the bare minimum of a safe, healthy and habitable place to call home as the patches and cut corners start to crumble will go unanswered. The calls for help momentarily considered, only if they look up from counting their cash long enough to slap the cheapest possible "Band-Aids" that can be used to get through their year lease. Then the tenant must chose between moving again and all the financial, physical and emotional energy that must be spent to make that happen.. OR the privilege to stay another year in the "their lucky it's not worse" conditions for another $400 more in rent than they were paying last year. (And no no repairs will be made before you sign your new lease.)

You may be thinking. Surely it's not that bad... I mean. There are plenty of decent landlords and property management companies out there. It's not all that bad. In part, you would be absolutely right. There are some amazing landlords out there who actually care and take the responsibility of providing someone a home very seriously. For me though, the people getting hurt are the ones who also don’t have a voice or the resources to fight back. They are just trying to survive and I knew I couldn’t just complain about the way things were. If I wanted to create real change, I had to build something that proved homes could be managed differently and contractors aren’t all shady. That’s when the Yellow Door Standard became more than an idea — it became our promise.
